"Greenifying" Our Life

As the main person that selects household supplies for our home, I try to make educated purchases.

Recently I've been made more aware of reducing the amount of chemicals that are put on our skin.  A common culprit here?  Dryer sheets.  My old motto: the stronger the scent, the better!  Give me something with "Vanilla Lavender" written on the package, charge me $4 for that small box, and send me on my way!

It wasn't long ago that I read about a product called Nellie's Dryerballs on a blog.  I immediately jotted down the name on a yellow sticky and kept it on my work desk.

{Tangent ... can we talk about how influential blogs are for purchases, by the way?  Anyone else feel like a good 30% of items they decide are a "must-have" were spotted on blogs?  Mint jeans, anyone?!}

I'd hoped to order them online at some point soon, so you can imagine how excited I was to find them last week here in Charlotte.

And moreso, at Marshalls!
For $6.99, they immediately came home with me.

The benefit of these dryer balls:
  • Reduce the amount of drying time
  • Reduce the chemicals that end up on your clothes & body
  • Help to prevent static cling
  • Non-toxic, environmentally friendly
  • Hypoallergenic -- great for sensitive skin

Not to mention, they are quite cost-efficient.  These puppies will apparently last me 3-5 years.  For $7, that is much less than I was spending on dryer sheets every few months.

You can find Nellie's All-Natural Products on the web for more info on their products.

Also, I've spotted similar products at other places, most recently on Amazon and at Old Time Pottery and Bed, Bath & Beyond.

So tell me, have you made a switch-out for a more natural household product?

  1. Those are so cute!! I love the vintage look of the package- I can't believe they last so long!

  2. What a good find! Perhaps a dumb they smell at all? I also can't get enough of those super-scented vanilla-lavender dryer sheets!

  3. Very interesting find, I will keep an eye out for those. I learned in my textiles class in college that dryer sheets actually produce a wax like film (think about their texturre) onto your clothes, towels etc, which in turn repels water...not exactly what you want on a towel! I try to use them minimally with that in mind.

  4. I'll admit - I'm a sucker for lavender scented dryer sheets, but your list of "pro's" for these dryer balls are swaying me! I'll have to look for them next time I'm in Marshall's!

  5. i totally agree about buying coming from blogs. such a love hate relationship!

i'm definitely going to have my eyes peeled for this product, looks great.

  6. Nice find! I read that dryer sheets break down the fibers in your clothes quicker so I stopped using them a while ago. Might have to try this. Thanks!

  7. I have dryer balls but they aren't Nellies? Wonder if there is a difference?
I honestly, don't think they work.. but for some reason I still use them.
I also still use Downey b/c I'm just weird like that. NO dryers sheets though. YUCK!

  8. Great find! I use the "green" cleaning supplies at target.

  9. OMG. I need these. I feel like way more than 30% of my must have buys come from blogs. dangerous.

  10. Definitely want to know how well they work on towels! I stopped using them because I read they break down the fibers and prevent towels from absorbing, like a few other people noted. I use them now with a little water to clean our glass shower doors, which works so well!

  11. what a fabulous idea! i cannot wait to hunt for these myself!

  12. Cool! I stopped using dryer sheets a while ago, due to the advice of an appliance repair man. But I bet these are better.

  13. I'll have to try those out! My cousin works for the EPA and she's always educating us on keeping chemicals out of our homes. She'd be delighted to hear about these!

  14. Thanks for the product review! I want to try these now! I wasn't aware of all the negative issues with dryer sheets. Thanks!:)

  15. Great idea, but I use dryer sheets as we live in a high iron (well water) area and need the sheets for the scent on the clothes. Do these have a scent?

  16. But do they make your sheets smell delicious? I know, I know. But I'm just a sucker for a springtime scent!
